Climate change is already affecting our food supply, and it's only going to get worse. The UK imports 40 - 80% of our food, and climate change is making it harder for farmers to grow fruit and vegetables. This means that we could run out of food in the near future.

The empty shelves in UK supermarkets are a warning sign. Even though the shortages right now aren't that bad, they're a sign of what's to come. Climate change could have a major impact on our food security, just like the COVID-19 pandemic.

We can't just sit around and wait for things to get worse. We need to take action now to protect our food supply. We can do this by growing our own food, supporting sustainable farmers, and eating less imported food.

Let's stop waiting for problems to happen and start planning for the future. Let's make sure that we always have enough food to eat, no matter what climate change throws our way.

What are the SDGs and why they are important?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 interconnected global goals designed to create a better world for people and the planet by 2030. Adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, the SDGs are a blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. They are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. The SDGs address a wide range of global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice.

HavenWeb aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as;

  1. SDG 2 Zero Hunger: By empowering individuals to cultivate their own food, we are directly contributing to the goal of eliminating hunger. Providing resources and knowledge for sustainable agriculture can enhance food security and reduce dependency on external food sources.

  2. SDG 3 Good Health & Well-being: Access to nourishing food directly impacts people's health and well-being. By promoting homegrown, organic produce, you are encouraging healthier eating habits and improving overall health in communities. Furthermore, people who are involved with nature and gardening show enhanced well-being as supported by research.

  3. SDG 4 Quality Education: HavenWeb provides knowledge and tools, which align with the goal of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education. Educating people about sustainable farming practices and environmental conservation enhances their skills and capacities.

  4. SDG 11 Sustainable Cities & Communities: By engaging with local communities, HavenWeb strengthens community bonds and promotes sustainable practices within urban and rural areas. Encouraging local agriculture also reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting food over long distances.

  5. SDG 12 Responsible Consumption & Production: Cultivating one's food promotes responsible consumption by reducing reliance on mass-produced, resource-intensive agriculture. It encourages a more sustainable way of living by promoting self-sufficiency and reducing waste.

  6. SDG 15 Life on Land: By creating permaculture gardens we revive local biodiversity and allowing it to flourish. By promoting sustainable agricultural practices, we contribute to the preservation and restoration of terrestrial ecosystems, ensuring the diversity of life on land.

By fostering a connection with the natural world, enhancing well-being, and strengthening community bonds, HavenWeb not only supports these specific SDGs but also contributes to the overall vision of a sustainable and balanced world as outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
